Cabinet 14: The Double Issue

Book DescriptionOn the theme of "the Doppelganger," Cabinet collaborates with Kabinet , a Russian journal of art and cultural theory based in Saint Petersburg. The collaborative themed section includes a comparison by American astronauts of Soviet cosmonauts; an investigation of the color "Red"; and an interview with Viktor Sukhodrev, who was, for 30 years, the top diplomatic translator in the Soviet Union, present in conversations between Khruschev and JFK, Carter and Brezhnev, etc. Also in this issue, Shelley Jackson's "fold-in" essay on conjoined twins, Joanna Burton on the town of Reno and the culture of divorce, artist's projects by Josiah McElheny and Komar & Melamid, and more. Cabinet is a quarterly magazine of art and culture that confounds expectations of what is typically meant by the words "art," "culture," and even sometimes "magazine." Like the 17th-century cabinet of curiosities to which its name alludes, Cabinet is as interested in the margins of...

Cabinet 18: Fictional States

Book DescriptionFrom the perfectly organized island nation of Sir Thomas More's Utopia to the idealized mountain stronghold of Eldorado visited by the naive hero of Voltaire's Candide , the idea of the fictional state--utopian or dystopian, satirical or idealistic--has a long and distinguished pedigree in literature and philosophy. The issues explored by these classic imaginings--including questions of governmental organization, economic mechanisms, social policy, and cultural norms--are just as vital today as in the past, and continue to give rise to new alternative states, nations, and principalities inspired equally by political dissent and artistic fancy. Journeying in this expanded landscape of imaginary municipalities--with its unorthodox histories, ersatz bureaucratic apparatuses, do-it-yourself credentials, and fantasy topographies-- Cabinet no. 18 features William Bryk on the ephemera of fictional states, George Pendle on the socio-political trajectory of...

Cabinet 38: Islands

The seclusion of islands has long made them ideal screens for our fantasies and terrors, choice locations for military and scientific assays, and perfect settings for escapes, incarcerations and battles for survival. In consideration of these dynamics, Cabinet 38 features Julia Wolcott discussing islands in science fiction; Jeffrey Kastner on being marooned; Janet Connelly on West Berlin as an island; Simon Rezak on island penal colonies; the story of the "Chinese Princess" Der Ling, a onetime student of Isadora Duncan who set up court on a Mexican island in the 1920s; and an artist project by Jeremy Drummond. Off-the-island treasures include Anthony Grafton on the Last Supper's culinary legacy; Aaron Schuster on cinematic sneezes; Jonathan Hardy on the Spanish urban grid; Maggie Nelson on the color red; George Pendle on the first computer dating system; Allen S. Weiss on Japanese garden design; and an artist project by Alejandro Cesarco.

Cabinet 39: Learning

What is learning? An excruciating struggle with techniques and facts? A sensation of joyful encounter with the hitherto unknown? The very notion of the pedagogical conjures a whole range of emotions, and its implications are evident throughout society--for what is culture, after all, but the transmission of knowledge? The thematic section of Cabinet 39 features an interview with John Haynes, pioneer of the modern instruction manual; Jeff Dolven outlining the theater of pedagogy; Elaine Traub tracing the history of distance learning; Sina Najafi tracking the development of the A-F grading system; and an interview with Zoe Readhead, principal of Summerhill, the world's first "free school." Elsewhere in the issue: Michael Shipley on voice experts used by the police and security services; Emily Walters on boots and colonialism; Suzanne Scott on the history of suntanning; Kris Lee on Kierkegaard and the promotional blurb; and Katrin Arnardottir on the sex lives of Icelandic elves.

Caliphs And Kings: The Art and Influence Of Islamic Spain

Book DescriptionCaliphs to Kings includes rarely seen Islamic objects ranging from textiles to ceramics to gold. Emphasizing themes of longevity, continuity, and transmission in the Islamic decorative arts and sciences of medieval Spain, the book includes works dating from the time of the Arab conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century to the final phase of Muslim life in Spain in the sixteenth century. Objects from tenth-century Cordoba illustrate the creation of a unique court aesthetic under the calipate that was widely copied by both Muslim and Christian rulers in the following centuries. Later works show the eclectic aesthetic, intellectual, and political culture that resulted from the Christian conquests in the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries of the cities of Andalusia. During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Muslim craftsmen working both in the kingdom of Granada and for Christian patrons (the crown, nobility, and the Church) in Seville, Toledo,...

Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative?: An exploration of the relationship between perceptions of spectators and narratives of authors in moving images

This book explores the areas of human perception and story narrative in moving images. Engaged by the research question, ?Can spectators become co-authors in the process of a story narrative??, the research focuses on exploring the co-existence and contradiction between the values of spectators and an author in a process of a narrative by developing a new potential narrative approach with multiple perspectives. I hypothesise that spectators could participate with the story narrative process as co-authors. My key method is to engage with spectators' participation within a narration (story) by displaying story fragments across multiple screens simultaneously. The potential of having a story spread across multiple screens might bring further interest to authors to re-think the notion of a spectator and tell a story with multiple perspectives in a narrative process with spectators.

Canvas Documentaries: Panoramic Entertainments in Nineteenth-Century Australia and New Zealand

Book DescriptionMoving panorama and diorama pictures came to Australia and New Zealand during the gold rush of the 1850s and 1860s, when entrepreneurs brought great lengths of canvas from Britain and America depicting battles and journeys from England toIndia and Australia; local artists soon followed suit. This in-depth look at the Australian panorama industry illustrates the influence of British and American popular culture in Australia and New Zealand, and provides fresh insight into the largely ignored visual and cultural influences that helped form the colonial experience.

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius: The Book of Palms / Das Buch der Palmen / Le livre des palmiers

On 15 December 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking "Historia naturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum" (Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes), published between 1823-1850. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, including landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections. This epic folio was based on Martius's expedition to Brazil and Peru with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, sponsored by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, to investigate natural history and tribal Indians. From 1817 to 1820 the pair travelled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) throughout the Amazon Basin, the most species-rich palm region in the world, collecting and sketching...

Cezanne and Provence : The Painter in His Culture

Book Description In 1886 Paul Cezanne left Paris permanently to settle in his native Aix-en-Provence. Nina M. Athanassoglou-Kallmyer argues that, far from an escapist venture like Gauguin's stay in Brittany or Monet's visits to Normandy, Cezanne's departure from Paris was a deliberate abandonment intimately connected with late-nineteenth-century French regionalist politics. Like many of his childhood friends, Cezanne detested the homogenizing effects of modernism and bourgeois capitalism on the culture, people, and landscapes of his beloved Provence. Turning away from the mainstream modernist aesthetic of his impressionist years, Cezanne sought instead to develop a new artistic tradition more evocative of his Provencal heritage. Athanassoglou-Kallmyer shows that Provence served as a distinct and defining cultural force that shaped all aspects of Cezanne's approach to representation, including subject matter, style, and technical...
