Abitare: 50 Years of Design: The Best of Architecture, Interiors, Photography, Travel, and Trends 1961-2011

The first-ever compilation of the most innovative design magazine of the 1960s and 1970s. Launched in 1961, Abitare is considered by some to be the Wallpaper* magazine of its day: the source of all things hip, important, and avant-garde, as well as must-know information and must-have objects, many of which have become design classics fifty years later. This important compilation brings together the very best of the Abitare universe: the most noteworthy design developments of the last fifty years, with emphasis on the 1960s and 1970s. Abitare was founded to cover the growing influence of Italian design but also to gather the most interesting trends worldwide, from the mod fashion in London, and the rise of alternative lifestyles in New York and San Francisco, to the development of industrial design in Milan. Classic articles from Abitare are reproduced in full, with their original English and Italian texts, while new essays by noted writers and past editors reflect on the influence of...

Alberto Pinto: Bedrooms

Alberto Pinto is among the most celebrated interior designers at work today and is known primarily for his highly creative use of color and texture to achieve the effect of unparalleled opulence. Here, Pinto turns his attention to the most intimate and personal space in any home - the bedroom. Pinto succeeds in giving each of the fifty-one bedrooms featured in this handsomely illustrated volume his unequalled touch of grandeur while evoking its owner's personality. Under Pinto's direction, the bedroom becomes a fantasy - like oasis that can be adorned with fine damasks and brocades, gorgeously colored mosaics, luminously polished antique woods, soothing fountains, or neoclassical columns. The resulting bedrooms are contemporary, yet suffused with a sense of the classic and the timeless. Realizing that a bedroom is the sum of its parts and needs to be a functional space as well as a haven, Alberto Pinto expands his design brief to include ancillary spaces that are often...
Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era

Julia Bryan-Wilson

Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam War Era

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, in response to the political turbulence generated by the Vietnam War, an important group of American artists and critics sought to expand the definition of creative labor by identifying themselves as "art workers." In the first book to examine this movement, Julia Bryan-Wilson shows how a polemical redefinition of artistic labor played a central role in minimalism, process art, feminist criticism, and conceptualism. In her close examination of four seminal figures of the period--American artists Carl Andre, Robert Morris, and Hans Haacke, and art critic Lucy Lippard--Bryan-Wilson frames an engrossing new argument around the double entendre that "art works." She traces the divergent ways in which these four artists and writers rallied around the "art worker" identity, including participating in the Art Workers' Coalition--a short-lived organization founded in 1969 to protest the war and agitate for artists' rights--and the New York Art Strike. By...

Arts, Sciences, and Economics: A Historical Safari

This book deals with the economic aspects of changing attitudes in arts and sciences. The effects of the public good character of culture, along with the very long production period and lifetime for its products, are emphasized, since both contribute to the failure of normal market solutions. Embodiment of ideas, and the consequences of modern reproduction technology for protection of property rights are closely examined.

Avant-Garde Art and Artists in Mexico: Anita Brenner's Journals of the Roaring Twenties

The Mexican Revolution--that violent, inchoate, never-quite-complete break with the past--opened a new era in Mexican art and letters now known as the "Mexican Renaissance." In Mexico City, a coterie of artists including Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros explored how art could forward revolutionary ideals--and, in the process, spent countless hours talking, gossiping, arguing, and partying. Into this milieu came Anita Brenner, in her early twenties already trying her hand as a journalist, art critic, and anthropologist. Her journals of the period 1925 to 1930 vividly transport us to this vital moment in Mexico, when building a "new nation" was the goal.Brenner became a member of Rivera's inner circle, and her journals provide fascinating portraits of its members, including Orozco, Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, and Jean Charlot, with whom she had an unusual loving relationship. She captures the major and minor players in the act of creating works for which they...

Benin: Visions of Africa series

The Benin kingdom of the Edo people flourished in West Africa between the 15th and 19th centuries. The latest volume in the highly regarded Visions of Africa series explores the remarkable court art of this powerful empire. Their unique bronzes and stunning ivory and wood carvings enjoyed a place in the royal palace grounds of Benin City until 1897, when the empire succumbed to British rule and the works were scattered around the globe. These works were essential elements in court rituals and representation, and are reassembled here for the first time. In this beautifully illustrated study of a fascinating chapter in African art history, a leading scholar introduces the complex history, iconography, and function of Benin royal art and discusses various approaches to its interpretation and stylistic development.

Cloisonne: Chinese Enamels from the Ming and Qing Dynasties

The technique of applying brilliant enamel ornament to metalwork, known as cloisonn?, reached its peak in China from the fourteenth century on. This sumptuously illustrated survey, which accompanies an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center, situates these remarkable pieces in their context with a survey of the historical, political and sociological milieu in China during the period. Research recently undertaken in China and published here for the first time has resulted in the redating of a number of objects with significant implications for the overview of Chinese cloisonne production. Shapes, functions, pattern, and symbolism in cloisonne objects are all examined and explored. And the final section of the book reviews the impact of developments in China on later production in Europe, as well as the acquisition of cloisonne pieces by the major American museums and private collectors at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Kristeva Reframed: Interpreting Key Thinkers for the Arts (Contemporary Thinkers Reframed)

For Kristeva, in a world immersed in readymade images, art or aesthetic experience is a practice that constitutes both a subject (a sense of self) and an object that is able to transform meaning and consciousness. Kristeva Reframed examines key ideas in Kristeva's work to show how they are most relevant to artists, and how they can be applied in interpreting artworks. With examples from the paintings of Van Gogh and Picasso, the work of contemporary feminist painters, the photography of Bill Henson and the film and animation work of Van Sowerine, Estelle Barrett demonstrates how Kristeva can illuminate the relationships between artist and art object, between artists, artworks and audiences, and between art and knowledge. Through these relationships she explores what Kristeva's work reveals about the role and function of art in society and offers a smooth passage through Kristeva's ideas and her relevance to visual culture.

London Wallpapers: Their Manufacture and Use 1690-1840 (Revised Edition)

London Wallpapers, first published in 1992, has long been out of print. In this new, revised edition there is a substantially enlarged list of wallpaper manufacturers in all their various guises: stationers, paper stainers, paper hanging manufacturers, paper hangers, even "Thomas William Paul, fancy cabinet maker & paper stainer." The list has doubled in size to nearly 800 names covering the longer period 1690 to 1840. Also included for the first time is a particularly fine water-colour of a hand-block printer at work c.1880, a time when the process had achieved its apogee but had not yet been totally replaced by mechanical printing methods. The book describes the method in which rag-based paper was made for wallpaper use, the manner in which wallpaper was printed using hand-carved wooden blocks - with a detailed description of printing flock papers, a fashion for which has recently re-emerged. There is a brief description of the taxes on wallpaper introduced in 1712 and which still...
