"This eighth edition differs basically from its predecessors in the Greek part, which now represents the 27th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece. The Greek text remains unchanged from that of the 26th edition, which is also that of the Fourth (and Third) edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament, but significant changes have been made in the critical apparatus. A new appendix (II) gives additional and explicit information about the readings of Greek manuscripts. For detailed discussion, especially about new features in the 27th edition, see pp. 3*-6* below. We express our sincere and profound gratitude, first of all to our colleagues in the Institute for New Testament Textual Research, who have all contributed in special ways, participating in their respective areas with rare dedication. Special credit is due Gerd Mink and Beate Koster, without whose critical and constructive counsel in so many details it would have been impossible to achieve the...
The popular perception of the Bible as a divinely perfect book receives scant support from Ehrman, who sees in Holy Writ ample evidence of human fallibility and ecclesiastical politics. Though himself schooled in evangelical literalism, Ehrman has come to regard his earlier faith in the inerrant inspiration of the Bible as misguided, given that the original texts have disappeared and that the extant texts available do not agree with one another. Most of the textual discrepancies, Ehrman acknowledges, matter little, but some do profoundly affect religious doctrine. To assess how ignorant or theologically manipulative scribes may have changed the biblical text, modern scholars have developed procedures for comparing diverging texts. And in language accessible to nonspecialists, Ehrman explains these procedures and their results. He further explains why textual criticism has frequently sparked intense controversy, especially among scripture-alone Protestants. In discounting not only the...

The word Tanakh consists of the first letters of the words denoting the three sections of the text: the Torah (the Law), consisting of the first five books; the Nevi'im (the Prophets), which includes major and minor prophets, as well as some of the history books; and the Kethuvim (the Writings), which consists of poetry, wisdom literature, stories and eschatological literature, and some further history books.
In Tantra, the world is the union of the male and female as manifested in human life as sexual and spiritual love. Sexuality becomes a form of meditation, a sacred and magical act. Tantra is millennia old, yet brings us a fresh vision of ourselves, our life, and the world. It is exotic and archaic yet close to our own roots. Van Lysebeth's book reveals secret sexual techniques to enhance relationships and open the doors of perception. He also explores how the repression of the feminine in the world's patriarchal cultures is the esoteric cause of the modern world's crisis. Van Lysebeth's book, illustrated with eight colour pages of Indian paintings drawn from the Tantric experience, is for all readers looking for new dimensions and understanding in their lives. From the Author This book rectifies popular misconceptions about Tantra. The popular Western (and even Eastern) opinion about Tantra is that it is "spiritual sexuality" at best or "sexual libertarianism" at worst. In actual...

The Cambridge History treats the Bible as a central document of Western civilization, a source of exegesis and of doctrine, an influence on education, on the growth of scholarship, on art and literature, as well as on the liturgy and the life of the Christian church and its members. This volume commences the study of the Bible in the West. It begins with Jerome and the Fathers and goes on to the time of Erasmus. Introductory chapters look back and rapidly survey the growth of the biblical canon in the pre-Christian period and the early church, and early Christian book-production. The central portion of the volume discusses exposition and exegesis of the Scriptures: in the hands of the Fathers, in the Medieval Schools, in the Liturgy and in the tradition of medieval Jewish scholarship. The permeation of European culture by the Scriptures is illustrated by themes in art and manuscript illustration, and by separate sections on each of the main vernacular languages, giving special...
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Judean desert between 1947 and 1956 was one or the greatest archaeological finds of all time. These extraordinary manuscripts appear to have been hidden in the caves at Qumran by the Essenes, a Jewish sect in existence before and during the time of Jesus. Written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, the scrolls have transformed our understanding of the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism and the origins of Christianity. This is a fully revised edition of the classic translation by Geza Vermes, the world's leading Dead Sea Scrolls scholar. It is now enhanced by much previously unpublished material and a new preface, and also contains a scroll catalogue and an index of Qumran texts.
