Machine perception is a research field that is still in its infancy and is confronted with many unsolved problems. In contrast, humans generally perceive their environment without problems. These facts were the motivation to develop a bionic model for human-like machine perception, which is based on neuroscientific and neuro-psychological research findings about the perceptual system of the human brain. Having systems available that are capable of a human-like perception of their environment allow the automation of processes, which, today, require human observers and their cognitive abilities. As research results show, a technically functioning and implementable model of human-like perception does not only lead to more efficient machine perception systems but also to a better understanding of the perceptual system of the brain.
"A Second Genesis" enquires why nature is intelligible. The fast growth of technology and deeper understanding of the humanities have provided significant clues. Answering the question why nature can be understood requires an introduction to the new science of astrobiology and the exploration of the Solar System. A careful discussion of a 'second Genesis' is presented, namely our present awareness that life may have emerged on other worlds. Writing this volume has been motivated by the need to encourage a constructive dialogue between science and faith.Such an objective for a new book is timely, since science is inserted with well-defined frontiers in the context of human culture. Similarly, the frontiers of faith do not require religion to justify itself in scientific terms, avoiding current unnecessary controversies. This book intends to engage readers interested in the position of humans in nature. It makes a serious effort to avoid demanding detailed knowledge of science,...
Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. policymakers have faced the challenge of addressing the technological requirements of both economic competitiveness and national security. The changed international environment has provided the scope for American authorities to better support economic progress, which has then turned attention to the needs of the high technology industry. Promoting the technological objectives of competitiveness and security poses a daunting task as these objectives can differ significantly in terms of technological autonomy, the private sector's role, and the time frame involved. The difficulties inherent in addressing the technological requirements of both security and competitiveness are being exacerbated further by deepening technological globalization and the transnational processes of development, application, and diffusion that result. This volume analyzes the ongoing efforts of American authorities to balance the often-conflicting technological...

The fast-growing field of Animal Studies is a varied and much contested domain. Engagement with animals has encouraged both collaboration and conflict between researchers within the arts, humanities, and social sciences. "Animal Encounters" comprises a series of meetings not only between diverse beasts, but also between distinct disciplinary methods, theoretical approaches, and ethical positions. The essays here collected come together from literary and cultural studies, sociology and anthropology, ecocriticism and art history, philosophy and feminism, science and technology studies, history and posthumanism, to study that most familiar and most foreign of creatures, 'the animal'. These encounters between leading practitioners in the field highlight the promise and potential of interspecies exchange and mutual provocation.
In this book Professor Orrego Vicuna examines in depth the legal framework - the Antarctic Treaty, sovereignty, jurisdiction, and the law of the sea - as it relates to the exploitation of Antarctic minerals.
This is a major work by the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, whose writings have been deeply influential on subsequent generations of philosophers. It is offered here in a new translation by Judith Norman, with an introduction by Rolf Peter Horstmann that places the work in its historical and philosophical context.
The biological sciences are now in the midst of a true life sciences revolution akin to what physics experienced just after the turn of the last century. We are now in a phase of unparalleled growth that is reflected by the amount of data generated from each experiment. At the time of this writing, the rate of data acquisition was approaching 2 terabytes over the course of 5 days with first pass analysis proceeding over the following 2-3 week period. This fundamental shift has provided unprecedented opportunities that for the first time afford us the ability, i.e., means, breadth, and depth of data, to truly address human biology at the systems level. This wealth of information from seemingly disparate datasets and its integration is being realized through bioinformatics. It is with this philosophy that the text Bioinformatics for Systems Biology was born. This revolution has spawned true personalized medicine that encompasses diagnostics and treatment through to cure. For the...

In addition, this is the only guide to illustrate the birds of Angola (including Cabinda), whose river basins and rocky hillsides are home to the striking White-headed Robin Chat and the Angolan Cave Chat. The 84 color plates group similar species and subspecies and also depict vagrants and ocean wanderers that appear in this huge region characterized by widely varying habitats, from woodlands and forests to deserts to swamps. The text directly opposite the plates concisely describes each bird's habitat and key physical, behavioral, and vocal characteristics. All the larks are shown perching as well as in flight, and every swallow is pictured in flight from below. The most distinctive immature and nonbreeding plumages are included, and distribution maps show the range...

Drawing upon the Australian section of Darwin's diary and extracts, this book traces Darwin's travels in Australia in 1836. A lavishly illustrated book, it includes a number of maps enabling the reader to trace Darwin's journey throughout mainly New South Wales, but also Tasmania and Western Australia.
This two volume set consists of one copy of each Climate Change and Vulnerability and Climate Change and Adaptation, which are also sold singly. Many parts of the developing world are subject to variable and extreme climate, the impacts of which impede development and point to the need to improve the understanding and management of climate risks. These needs are being amplified by human-caused climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in its 2001 report that much of the developing world is highly vulnerable to adverse impacts from climate change. But the IPCC also concluded that the vulnerabilities of developing countries are too little studied and too poorly understood to enable determination of adaptation strategies that would be effective at reducing risks. These authoritative volumes, resulting from the work of the Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change (AIACC) project launched by the IPCC in 2002, are the first to provide a...
