Angel Saenz-Badillos

A History of the Hebrew Language

Издательство: Cambridge University Press
Год издания: 1996
Код ISBN:
Формат:
Страниц: 384
Содержание:
A History of the Hebrew Language is a comprehensive description of Hebrew from its Semitic origins and the earliest settlement of the Israelite tribes in Canaan to the present day. Professor Saenz-Badillos sets Hebrew in the context of the Northwest Semitic languages and examines the origins of Hebrew and its earliest manifestations in ancient Biblical poetry, inscriptions, and prose written before the Babylonian exile. He looks at the different medieval traditions of pointing classical Biblical Hebrew texts and the characteristic features of the post-exilic language, including the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He gives particular attention to Rabbinic and medieval Hebrew, especially as evidenced in writings from Spain. His survey concludes with the revival of the language in this century in the form of Israeli Hebrew.

Things that Talk : Object Lessons from Art and Science

Book DescriptionImagine a world without things. There would be nothing to describe, nothing to explain, remark, interpret, or complain about. Without things, we would stop speaking; we would become as mute as things are alleged to be. In nine original essays, internationally renowned historians of art and of science seek to understand how objects become charged with significance without losing their gritty materiality. True to the particularity of things, each of the essays singles out one object for close attention: a Bosch drawing, the freestanding column, a Prussian island, soap bubbles, early photographs, glass flowers, Rorschach blots, newspaper clippings, paintings by Jackson Pollock. Each is revealed to be a node around which meanings accrete thickly. But not just any meanings: what these things are made of and how they are made shape what they can mean. Neither the pure texts of semiotics nor the brute objects of positivism, these things are saturated with cultural...

Art Against the Odds : From Slave Quilts to Prison Paintings

Book DescriptionA fascinating exploration of the healing power of art. Children and adults alike find comfort in making things, but never has the act of creating been so poignant as when it is done during times of duress, such as in concentration camps and prisons, during extreme drought and poverty, or while battling mental illness. In this fascinating collection, Susan Goldman Rubin has captured the essence of creating as a way to momentarily escape horrible circumstances. From the drawings of a child imprisoned in Terezin to quilts created by slave women in the United States, history repeatedly shows us people finding solace in crafting beautiful things. This striking introduction to outsider art is illustrated in full color with examples from each time period.

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Bone is an independently published comic book series, originally serialized in 55 irregularly-released issues from 1991 to 2004. Bone was drawn and written by Jeff Smith. Smith's black-and-white drawings were inspired by animated cartoons and comic strips, a notable influence being Walt Kelly's Pogo: "I was a big fan of Carl Barks and Pogo, so it was just natural for me to want to draw that kind of mixture of Walt Kelly and Moebius." Accordingly, the story is singularly characterized by an effective combination of both light-hearted comedy and dark, epic fantasy: Time Magazine has called the series "as sweeping as the Lord of the Rings cycle, but much funnier." The series was published bimonthly with some delays from June 1991 to June 2004. The series was...

The Art of Man: Fine Art of the Male Form Quarterly Journal, Vol. 3 (Volume 3)

Theartofman.net becomes a reality! This quarterly seeks to bring balance to a genre of art that overwhelmingly favors the female figure. We feature artists that are courageous enough to focus on the male figure as a significant portion of their portfolio. We bring you in-depth interviews into their thought processes, choices, struggles and creativity in a way no book on the subject can; a buffet for the connoisseur of figurative art. This journal includes interviews with five artists; Philip Shadbolt, Miriam Perez, Paul Rybarczyk, Robert Fontanelli, Jean Chainey and Philip Hitchcock, owner of PHD Gallery. Art of Man always includes an historical article, this time focusing on Jean-Leon Gerome by Grady Harp plus tips for art collectors by the editor, this issue focusing on eBay fraud. The journal ends with information on other publications focusing on the classical male figure and a directory of over 150 artists and their websites.
